A FEW TIPS ON STARTING YOUR TOBY JUG COLLECTION
How much do we want to spend? How much can we afford? Are we collecting for future investment? What are our datelines?
First of all we must enjoy our Tobys. The pleasure one can get from building up a collection is extremely rewarding, and add to that the value, which generally will be increasing year by year. Whilst it is very important to have a reasonable idea what
your Toby(s) are worth, don't let financial considerations spoil your pleasure. You only live once. Will you specialize? Yorkshires, Staffordshire, Treacle Glazes, Running Glazes, Jolly Millers or Hearty Goodfellows? Maybe it would be a good idea to have a cross section of all of these. Have a look at the picture above, can you identify any of these? The third from the left on the top row is the fellow on the front cover of my book. A very colourful Prattware. On the second row, the furthest on the right is a beautiful Yorkshire, and just beneath him a French Faience example. Why not e mail me, rearl14@aol.com with your answers.
This picture may be a little small, but on the bottom shelf is a red coated Jolly Miller, he's quite unusual, and he has his crown, also a rather nice Nightwatchman and several attractive 1880 Ordinaries. Have a close look at the others, what can you see?
Here is an attractive Davenport Toby, dated around 1850. Davenports are always brightly coloured, and have a factory mark impressed on the base which includes a number indicating the month he was potted and other information. They lack the detail and fine modelling of earlier Tobys but are more impressive in most cases than later Victorian jugs. The Davenport pottery made many other artifacts, the Toby being only a very small part of their business. They produced a Drunken Sal which has become very rare indeed. The Toby type illustrated here currently sells for between £220 - £450 depending on condition.
Please e mail me at rearl14@aol.com to discuss any Tobys you may wish to buy or sell.
I am always pleased to receive e mail pictures of your Tobys, either one offs or several from your collection. I may produce a second volume to my book and I am always looking for new illustrations.
My book is available for £11.50 + £2.00 post and packing from Ron Earl, 9 Jubilee Avenue, North Ascot, Berks SL5 8NZ. It will be sent by return.
